What the connection must carry

The screen averages 2.21 kW, which is what you pay for — but it can draw 6.69 kW on full white. Your sanctioned load has to cover the peak, not the average.

Above about 5 kW this is normally taken across three phases rather than one. Worth confirming your supply before ordering — a sanction increase takes time and money.

Based on a typical outdoor panel at 750 W per square metre peak; real panels range roughly 6001000 depending on brightness and pitch. If you have a spec sheet, use its figure — every manufacturer states maximum and average power per square metre. Area here is 96 sq ft (8.92 m²).

Maximum and average are not the same number

Every LED spec sheet quotes two power figures per square metre, and buyers routinely read the wrong one. Maximum is what the panel draws showing full white at full brightness. Average is what it draws on real content — video, graphics, text — and it is usually about a third of maximum.

Use maximum to size the electrical supply, because the screen has to survive a full-white frame without tripping anything. Use average to budget the bill, because that is what the meter records. Sizing the connection on the average is how an installation ends with a tripped breaker; budgeting the bill on the maximum is how a project gets rejected for a running cost three times what it will actually be.

Typical figures

If you do not have a spec sheet yet, these are reasonable starting points. They vary by roughly two to one with brightness class and build quality, so treat them as a bracket rather than an answer.

  • Outdoor: 6001000 W per m² maximum. The high brightness needed to read a screen in Indian daylight is where the power goes.
  • Indoor: 350800 W per m² maximum. Dimmer, but denser at fine pitch, so the two partly cancel.

Why pitch matters less here than people expect

p10 led display power consumption and its variants are searched constantly, and the premise is slightly off. Pitch is not the main driver — area and brightness are. A finer pitch packs more LEDs into the same area, but each is driven less hard to reach the same brightness, so consumption per square metre stays in a similar band. The real gap is indoor against outdoor, because outdoor runs at several times the brightness.

Three ways to cut the bill without cutting the screen

  1. Schedule the brightness. An outdoor screen needs full output at midday and a fraction of it after dark. Automatic or scheduled dimming is standard on any decent controller and is the single largest saving available.
  2. Turn it off when nobody is there. Obvious, routinely not done, and worth setting as a schedule rather than relying on someone remembering.
  3. Design content that is not mostly white. A white background at full brightness is the most expensive thing you can display. Dark backgrounds with bright text read better at distance anyway.

Common questions

How much electricity does an LED display use?
It depends on area, brightness class and what is on the screen. A useful rule is that average draw is about a third of the panel’s maximum, because real content is not full white. Outdoor panels are typically 600–1,000 W per square metre at maximum and indoor 350–800 W, so a 12 × 8 ft outdoor screen averages roughly 2.5 kW and costs a few thousand rupees a month at typical commercial tariffs.
What is the difference between maximum and average power on an LED spec sheet?
Maximum is what the screen draws showing full white at full brightness. Average is what it draws on normal content, usually about a third of maximum. Size your electrical connection on the maximum, because that is what it must survive; budget your bill on the average, because that is what you actually consume.
How much power does a P10 LED display use?
Pitch itself is not what drives consumption — area and brightness are. A P10 outdoor panel and a P6 outdoor panel of the same size and brightness class draw broadly similar power, because both are lighting the same area to the same level. The larger difference is indoor versus outdoor, since outdoor runs at several times the brightness.
Do I need a three-phase connection for an LED screen?
Above roughly 5 kW peak the load is normally taken across three phases rather than one. That is around 100 sq ft of outdoor screen at typical brightness. Check the peak figure against your sanctioned load before ordering, because increasing a sanction takes time and money and is a poor thing to discover on installation day.
Does the screen use less power at night?
It should. Outdoor screens need very high brightness in daylight and far less after dark, and any decent controller supports scheduled or automatic dimming. Running an outdoor screen at full daytime brightness all night wastes power, shortens LED life and generates complaints — and in some places it is restricted outright.
