Indoor vs Outdoor LED Displays: What Actually Differs

They look similar in a brochure and are built quite differently. Getting this wrong is the most expensive mistake available, because an indoor panel outdoors fails within a season.

The difference is not the pixels. It is brightness, sealing, cabinet construction and the way the screen is serviced — and each of those is decided at manufacture, not adjustable afterwards.

Brightness is not a preference

An indoor panel at 1,200 nits can look severely washed out in strong daylight, and in direct sun it may be impractical to read at all — so do not put one on a frontage and hope. Meanwhile an outdoor panel at 6,000 nits used indoors is uncomfortable to look at and has to be dimmed to about a fifth of its capability, which wastes most of what you paid for. Buy for the environment, not for the bigger number.

Outdoor screens should also dim automatically at night. A 6,000-nit display running at full output after dark is unpleasant for neighbours, attracts complaints, and burns power for no benefit. Ask whether the controller includes an ambient light sensor or a scheduled brightness curve.

Service access

Indoor walls usually sit flush against a wall, so a failed module must come out from the front — which requires front-serviceable cabinets, specified at design time. Outdoor screens on a pole or frame usually have rear access, which is cheaper. If your outdoor screen is mounted flat against a building with no gap, you need front service there too.

Common questions

Can I use an indoor LED display outdoors under a cover?

Almost never. Even in a covered position, wind-driven monsoon rain reaches the back of the cabinet, and indoor brightness is not enough for daylight. If it can get wet from any direction, use a fully IP65 outdoor panel.

How many nits do I need outdoors?

At least 5,000 for a normal frontage, and 8,000 or more for a screen facing direct sun. Below 4,000 nits an outdoor display can struggle badly in strong midday light — how badly depends on orientation, sun exposure and how much shade the site gets — so write 5,000 on the order regardless of what the specification sheet claims.

What does IP65 actually mean?

Complete protection against dust, and protection against water jets from any direction. What matters is which sides carry it: confirm the rating for every side actually exposed to weather. For a cabinet standing fully in the open in Indian conditions that means front and rear, which is our commercial standard; a screen fixed flat against a building has its back protected by the wall. Front-only sealing on an exposed cabinet is common in cheaper quotes and a usual reason an outdoor display fails in its second monsoon.
