Interactive Panel vs Projector for Classrooms

The five-year cost decides this, not the sticker price — and the room decides it more than either. Written for schools, colleges and training institutes comparing the two.

Most classrooms replacing a blackboard today are choosing between a projector with a whiteboard and an interactive flat panel. The projector looks cheaper on the purchase order. Whether it stays cheaper depends on lamps, curtains and who has to maintain it — and on three things the panel does that a projector cannot.

Where the panel wins

  • Daylight: a panel holds a readable image with the lights on and windows open. A projector fights every lit room, and the usual fix — curtains drawn through the school day — is a real cost to attention.
  • Writing: infrared touch keeps up with handwriting, so it behaves like a board. Interactive projector overlays lag and drift out of calibration.
  • Running cost: no lamp. Projector lamps are consumables with real prices, and the classroom is dark for a week each time one dies in term.
  • Recording and recall: lessons annotate over any content and save. That is a teaching-practice change, not a spec line.

Where the projector still wins

  • Sheer size per rupee: past about 120 inches of image, projection is far cheaper than any panel.

One practical note either way: whoever supplies it should install it, train the teachers, and put the service terms in writing. The commonest failure of classroom technology is not the hardware — it is a device nobody was shown how to use, mounted by the lowest bidder.

How long does an interactive flat panel last?

Panels are typically rated around 30,000 hours to half brightness — roughly a decade of school use — with no consumables. The practical lifetime question is the warranty and whether service is on-site.

Can we use our existing teaching software on a panel?

Android covers browsers and most teaching apps. If your institution depends on Windows-only software, choose a panel with a slot-in Windows PC module — it can usually be added later.
