Why Your LED Screen Looks Terrible on Camera

The dark bands rolling across photographs of an LED display are usually a refresh-rate problem, and refresh capability is decided when the panel is built.

If photographs of your LED display show dark bands rolling across it, refresh rate is the first thing to suspect — though the camera’s shutter speed and the controller configuration matter too. Specify 1,920 Hz as an absolute minimum and 3,840 Hz for any screen that will be photographed or appear on camera. The driver ICs set the ceiling on what any configuration can reach, so buy the refresh rate you need rather than expecting to find it afterwards.

What is actually happening

An LED display does not hold each pixel continuously lit — it switches them on and off far faster than the eye can follow. A camera does not integrate light the way an eye does. Its sensor samples in a rolling scan, so it catches some rows mid-cycle and records them dark. The result is banding that is invisible in person and obvious in the photograph. How badly it shows depends on the shutter speed as well as on how the panel drives its LEDs — the scan ratio, the PWM behaviour and the driver ICs — which is why two phones in front of the same screen can give you two different answers.

Weddings are the case this matters most, and the advice online is wrong for India

An Indian wedding is the hardest test an LED screen faces. It is photographed continuously by guests, filmed by a professional crew, and often relayed live to the same screen. Every one of those paths goes through a camera, which is exactly where a cheap panel gives itself away.

There are two separate problems, and almost every guide online confuses them. One is fixed by what you buy; the other is fixed by how it is filmed, and neither fixes the other.

The 50 Hz problem

India runs on a 50 Hz supply. Mains-powered lighting therefore pulses at 100 times a second, and a camera whose shutter is not a multiple of that interval catches the pulses at different points in each frame, producing rolling bands across the whole picture.

Most shutter guidance published online assumes a 60 Hz supply, because it is written for North America. Following it here causes the problem it is meant to prevent.

Shutter speeds that avoid mains flicker. This is about the room lighting, not the LED panel — a low-refresh panel can still band at the correct shutter.

Why this is worth raising before the booking, not after

Both failures are discovered in the same place: when the family watches the film, weeks later. By then the screen is installed or the hire is over, the videographer has been paid, and nothing can be re-shot. It is the one category of complaint where there is no remedy at all.

So for a wedding, banquet hall or any venue that is filmed, we specify 3,840 Hz as standard rather than as an option, and we say so on the quotation. If a competing quote is cheaper and does not state a refresh rate, that is the most likely reason.

What shutter speed avoids flicker when filming in India?

India runs on a 50 Hz supply, so use a shutter that divides evenly into it — 1/50 at 25fps, or 1/100 at 50fps. The widely published advice of 1/60 and 1/120 is written for 60 Hz countries and causes banding here. This is separate from the panel’s refresh rate: a low-refresh screen can still band at the correct shutter.

Why does my LED screen flicker in photos but not in person?

Because a camera samples the image in a rolling scan rather than integrating light continuously, so it catches some rows while their LEDs are momentarily off. Higher refresh rates cycle fast enough that the camera cannot catch the gaps.

Can refresh rate be increased after installation?

Not meaningfully. The driver ICs and the receiving card set the ceiling at manufacture. Controller and configuration changes can shift how a panel behaves within that ceiling, but they cannot make a low-refresh panel into a high-refresh one. This is why it has to be specified on the quote rather than discovered afterwards.
