Transparent LED Displays for Glass Facades

What they are, where they genuinely work, and the two reasons most shops should not buy one.

Transparent LED is a widely spaced LED grid mounted onto glass, so you can see through it while it displays. Typical transparency is 60–80%, brightness is lower than a solid panel, and cost runs meaningfully higher per square foot. For a showroom or mall glass frontage it can be excellent. For most shops it is the wrong purchase.

How it works

The LEDs sit on thin strips with wide gaps between them. Your eye fills in the gaps at a distance, so it reads as an image; up close you see through it. The wider the spacing, the more transparent and the coarser the image — that trade-off is the entire product.

Where it genuinely works

  • Showroom windows where blocking daylight and the view of stock would be self-defeating
  • Mall glass balustrades and atrium frontages, viewed from a distance across an open space
  • Corporate lobbies where the architecture is the point and a solid black panel would spoil it
  • Retail where the window display itself is the merchandising and must stay visible

Cost

Expect a substantial premium over a solid indoor panel of the same area. It is made to order rather than held in stock and the panels are configured to the frontage, so it is quoted per project rather than from a published rate — see our transparent LED page for what we need in order to price it. Installation is also more involved, because the mounting has to attach to glass or to a frame around it without compromising the glazing.

Ask this before you commit

Stand where your customer stands and ask what you want them to see: the screen, or what is behind it. If the honest answer is "the screen", buy a solid panel. Transparent LED exists for the case where the answer is genuinely "both".

Common questions

How transparent is a transparent LED display?

Typically 60–80%, depending on the LED spacing. More transparency means a coarser image — that trade-off is the whole product, and no supplier can give you both.

Does transparent LED work in direct sunlight?

Poorly compared with a solid panel. There is less emitting area, so it is dimmer. On a sunlit shop frontage a solid outdoor screen will outperform it for less money.

What does transparent LED cost?

A substantial premium over a solid panel of the same area, plus more involved installation onto glazing. It is made to order and configured to the frontage, so it is quoted per project rather than from a per-square-foot rate — send us the glazing dimensions and we will give you a real figure.
